In 1904, during the construction of the Panama Canal, a temporary settlement known as New Portobelo was built where El Otro Lado now stands. The settlement was evacuated in 1914, and over the following decades nature reclaimed the area, leaving only traces such as our private historical dam. Walk through the surrounding jungle and discover this unique setting.
Hikes through the tropical forest
Discover the rainforest across a variety of habitats around Portobelo and experience its remarkable biodiversity. Hiking near the village offers the chance to see monkeys, sloths, and toucans, while deeper trails may reveal more elusive species such as poison dart frogs, along with excellent birdwatching opportunities.

El Otro Lado offers the perfect setting to reconnect with nature while staying active. Join a hike to the nearby forts of San Fernando and San Fernandito. You will get a good workout in while enjoying the best view of the whole bay.

Chagres River and Emberá Town Excursion
Visit an indigenous village set within a remarkable natural environment where the Emberá community lives in harmony with its surroundings. Discover their traditions through dance, music, cuisine, architecture, and the use of plants for natural medicine.
Observation Deck and Panama Canal Expansion
Visit the Agua Clara Visitor Center to observe the Panama Canal expansion and the passage of Neopanamax ships. This experience lasts approximately four to five hours, departing the property at 8:00 am. Reservations must be made at least one day in advance.
The Isthmus Bird Conservatory in Puerto Lindo
It is located in Puerto Lindo/El Garrote, on the Costa Arriba of Colón Province. The center operates as a wildlife breeding and conservation sanctuary. In addition to its renowned bird collection, it is home to a variety of tropical and exotic wildlife, including wild cats, tapirs, monkeys, a frog sanctuary, and ostriches.

Explore Panama City and visit the Museum of Biodiversity designed by Frank Gehry. Enjoy time in the historic Old Town and stop at the Miraflores Locks before returning to El Otro Lado.
