Cayuko – Kayaking Trip
The silence of kayak navigation allows you to enjoy the sounds of the river and the mangroves. The natural conditions and beautiful scenery of the river offer a delicate experience of ecotourism; an intriguing challenge for the adventure and nature lover. The cayuko is the authentic way to cross the river: it is carved by hand from the trunk of the espave tree. Because of its weight and dimensions, keeping the balance requires skills. An alternative is to make the excursion in a modern, light kayak which can hold up to three persons.
River excursion on the faraona
Get ready to take an unimaginable journey down the river at sunset in our barge, the “Faraona”. You will enjoy nature in a setting like no other, while El Otro Lado staff will accompany you, serving a ceviche taste-testing session joined by appropriate wines and beverages.
Walking-tour along the Paths of the Rainforest
Accompanied by a guide, you will set off on a long tour in the forest of the estate, where you can enjoy the spectacular beauty of nature and the silence which is only broken by nature sounds. This excursion will lead you to a world inhabited by tropical butterflies, birds, apes, and an abundant tropical flora.
Visit to fort San Fernando
One of the elements that are truly unique to El Otro Lado is seventeenth century battery, barracks and lookout of Fort San Fernando complex. These were constructed to protect the ships and property coming or leaving Portbelo Bay against the pirates who cruised the Caribbean. Part of its structure remains intact, with towers and long guns still vigilant. Rarely can one be so close and yet still touch and relive the history
